Abstract

In this paper we explore the design of opportunities for transformative learning experiences, specifically in the development of online learning environments. Although the literature urges educators to provide transformative experiences, pragmatic approaches to designing and affording opportunities for these experiences are seldom acknowledged. Through the lens of two contemporary online learning environments that have been experienced by millions of students, we provide an in-depth look at what we believe are the principles that guide the design of potentially transformative learning experiences. While it may be difficult to apply every principle in every environment, we urge designers to take an closer look at their designs to empower and motivate students, providing the opportunity for learner's to change the way they think, act, and feel – personal transformations.
