Abstract

The purpose of this roundtable is to discuss the effectiveness of a targeted game format in engaging middle school students in the skill and process of argumentation. A prototype game, the Evidence Game, was developed and evaluated. The game design applies specific features of targeted games that include rapid and competitive play, timed performance, immediate feedback, and high rates of responding. The discussion will include the overall assumptions about use of a targeted game format in the design of educational games as well as the success of a specific game feature to heighten student engagement. The effect of this feature on students’ performance within the game will be discussed.
