Abstract

In this paper it is argued that a holistic evaluation model is needed to cover the entire user experience, as we understand it from the theory of human-computer interaction. Therefore, only a further class of criteria must cover the design of the game itself, among them genre-specific game characteristics. It is argued that these characteristics cannot be simple reduced to a kind of unimportant entertainment components and therefore be neglected, be designed in any way or even reduced by deleting or exchanging serious component. Unfortunately, this often happens in current practice of serious game design. Genre-specific game elements must be understood as system components working together. If they are not realized in a proper way, the game will not work as far as user experience is concerned, because users connect certain expectation on game elements and game mechanisms with the respective genre. Missing components or ill-functioning of components may result in irritations or even dislike of the game as a whole. This problem is illustrated for role-playing adventure games.
