Abstract

The introduction of technology has been to augment the traditional teaching methods and not to replace them. As eLearning takes root at the institution, the eLearning unit is able to highlight the factors which contribute to successful implementation. The impact of these factors is supported by quantitative results, namely: the number of lecturers who voluntarily adopt eLearning practices; the number of online modules within the home-grown Open Source eLearning system; and the use of collaborative and assessment eTools. This paper seeks to tell the enduring story of how technology has emerged as one of the most sought after tools in teaching and learning in HEIs with special reference to the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Social responsiveness has also informed the objectives of the institution in its so journey towards improving ICT competencies among its constituency.
