Abstract

As a new lecturer, I wanted to be an exemplar for teachers in training as I sought to facilitate their growth and development. In the quest to achieve this, I continuously evaluated my pedagogy. Through the use of open-ended questioning, the students were required to provide ongoing feedback on methods and strategies utilized in classes. Through their responses I identified their need for differential instructions and adjusted my teaching methods and activities. I used my students as critical friends. Data were collected through journaling, professional conversations with my students and colleagues and collegial observations. Emergent themes revealed that my empowerment occurred in relation to empathy, openness to criticism, flexibility and self-confidence. Educators need therefore to reflect on their practice so they can be empowered and ready for change.
