Abstract

Educational courses in computing and multimedia often require students to evaluate existing digital interfaces as well as to design and develop new interfaces. Interfaces are pervasive and they greatly impact our ability to complete many tasks. The effectiveness of interfaces and their effect on people is an important area of study. In this paper, I discuss two data collection methods, usability testing and eye-tracking/visual attention, and related metrics that educators, researchers, and media developers can use to collect data from users in order to refine digital interfaces. In addition, I describe how these methods can be incorporated in educational settings by students to help them better understand the influence of digital interfaces on human information seeking behavior.
