Abstract

The motivation to move learning online are partially motivated by the desire of educators not only to reach out to people who need extra assistance with their learning but also people who are not able to participate in the traditional face-to-face classroom environment. In thinking about moving learning online we also need to think about the opportunities provided by virtual learning platforms like Blackboard to create a sense of community between learners and instructors and among learners. This is important because of the benefit these communities bring to learners when they are able to connect with instructors and among themselves for timely feedback and to share experiences. Given the relevance of these virtual community tools to learning it is important for their constant appraisal in order to enhance the sense of community among virtual learners.
