Practice of Promoting Reflection in Problem-based Learning by Using Social Media and its Viewer

We propose a way to reflect in problem-based learning (PBL) by using a social media and its viewer. Earlier studies say that reflection is important in PBL; however, few case studies show concrete methods and practice within authentic PBL projects. In this study, we focused on a university course in which students host an international exchange event. We designed the instruction and observed students’ usage of social media from the preparation before the event to the compilation of final reports. Although students worked hard to make the event a success and shared certain learning records through social media, the quality of the writing was inadequate and they did not access learning records after the event was over. However, we successfully stored the collection of learning records, which will be useful for future students. We also used our results to consider the ways to support and achieve deeper reflection.
