Abstract

The National Science Foundation-funded Gen-III Engineering Research Centers have a strong education component, especially for pre-college. The Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems Center (FREEDM) has programs for middle and high schools for teachers (Research Experience for Teachers), high school students (Young Scholars), and middle school students (summer camp). Research design in this environment requires special consideration of the multiple engineering lab and researchers, long term contact, and Federal stipends. To analyze impacts, a variety of instruments were considered to examine elements of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering for participants age 11 through adult.
