Science Career Exploration in an Appalachian Middle School: A Case Study

STEAMiE is an educational game engine developed by Ohio University for an NSF-GK-12 program called STEAM (Science and Technology Enhancement for Appalachian Middle-schoolers). The engine is designed to allow developers to create a variety of educational games that are used in the classroom to teach difficult concepts in science. Students often struggle to understand the value of learning the concepts taught in the classroom. Middle-schoolers often lose or do not have an interest in learning these concepts, because they do not understand how they are relevant in their future. Career Exploration is a game developed by STEAM, which is aimed to expose middle school students to science career fields that either require or build upon science topics that they are taught. This paper describes the development of Career Exploration and disseminates the results of the prototype version of the game at a middle school’s Career Fair Day.
