Abstract

In this study, we developed a classroom observation tool: Scene-Commentary Device (SCD). SCD has a unique function like “visual Post-it notes” in a computer. SCD support not only observing practices but also sharing episodes in classroom studies between observers and teachers. SCD is a small and lightweight mobile computer. We can move around carrying with SCD to observe various areas inside and outside of the classrooms. This application has two modes; the camera mode and the review/edit mode. The two modes are compiled in one thumbnail index card with the observed date, so that we can look back scene-episodes recorded any date in the past. If the researcher has observations in the morning session using SCD, the visual data with attached comments on the observations will be shared with the teachers in the afternoon session. SCD is an effective tool for ongoing-constructive classroom studies between researchers and teachers.
