Abstract

Teacher recruitment and retention in a rural area of North Texas is a challenge. When a $3 million dollar federal grant was received to address this challenge, the two universities involved began a journey toward developing a program that would support aspiring teachers as they completed their coursework and were inducted into their first years of the teaching profession. Project BEGIN (Beginning Educators Gain Instructional Nurturance) was off to a running start! Technology tools including a web portal, communication tools, and the design of online educational modules were an initial focus of the support effort. A content creation tool to allow educators to set up their own professional development sites or learning management systems is in process. A pool of highly qualified math and science teachers for high-need areas of North Texas will be the end result of Project BEGIN.
