Abstract
A historical opera theatre is a complex reality to communicate in all its facets. We developed an application based on web technology to allow virtual visit and interactive involvement among remote users, for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Two modules, based on QuickTime®VR and VRML technology, realise a visual reconstruction of the theatre: present and past days appearance of the building inside and outside with different degrees of interaction. Text, images, audio, video and voice is also used to emphasise appropriately the messages. Animation of scenes, simulation of audio and lights effects in the space are made possible by VRML and virtual dancers on stage can be controlled interactively by users.
