Abstract

Teacher educators and future teachers alike tend to value student opportunities to try, apply, and experience the content of their coursework. Because of the benefits of such collaborative and authentic practice, a flipped approach to instruction can empower teacher educators to deliver content asynchronously and prioritize active learning during face-to-face class time. PlayPosit is a technology tool that allows instructors to embed interactive elements into recorded lecture videos. The inclusion of attention checks, reflective pauses, open-ended questions, and resource links maximizes students’ engagement with pre-class, asynchronous content. In turn, instructors are better able to maximize students’ in-class engagement in discussions, activities, and projects. In this case example, I share my experience with shifting an introductory course on disability and special education into a flipped modality using PlayPosit. Implications and applications for teacher educators are discussed.
