Abstract
The impact of the outbreak of the COVID-19 on Higher Education Systems is such that many universities across South Africa, including bricks-and-mortar universities, have been forced to develop alternative educational delivery strategies of teaching and learning, moving the instructional processes online or mobile teaching and learning. This research explores the use of WhatsApp social media as innovative instructional strategy for academic development. A mixed methods research design was used and framed around the Design-Based Research (DBR) model and Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) model to develop the intervention. The quantitative data was collected via Google Forms survey tool. Conversely, qualitative data was collected through individual interviews and via WhatsApp Group Chat (WGC) trail messages. This study used thematic analysis to analyse qualitative data collected from WGC and face-to-face interviews. The analysis and textual data were done on the qualitative analysis program ATLAS.ti version 8. The study will finally report on the findings.
