Abstract

In the Digital Media Academy (DiMA) program students learn how to use technology for educational purposes and they create media content using a digital format. Stem Outreach Center created a 15-week DiMA curriculum integrating photography lessons for the online format and shared with local schools. Professional development (PD) sessions for instructors focused on curriculum basics, online teaching tools and strategies. The “Own it, Learn it, and Share it” framework informed the development of the lessons. It guides instructors to scaffold, motivate and engage learners to construct knowledge, demonstrate learning through constructing artefacts; and motivated them with autonomy. Participants in the study were 22 DiMA instructors who implemented the curriculum in 4th-7th grade classrooms. Data collection consists of open-ended surveys, group discussions, and collaborative conversations. The major findings are, instructors’ confidence enhanced after attending PDs, emergence of new skills among students and instructors, and student engagement in the online environment.
