Abstract

In this qualitative study, we analyzed Instagram posts (n = 310) across 18 online teacher influencers during four-weeks over the 2019 back-to-school season. Our goal was to understand the nature of the messages educational influencers impart on Instagram. We coded posts thematically using the constant comparative method, finding that teacher influencers’ posting encompassed four themes: soliciting engagement, motivating teachers, promoting products and themselves, and advocating for curricular approaches. Teacher influencers sometimes facilitated teacher networking, provided motivational messages for teachers, shared resources with teachers, and provided authentic examples of classroom practice. However, some influencers’ posts were quite promotional in nature, lacked thoughtful explanation, or missed an opportunity for connection to larger social issues facing teachers and students today. Implications for teacher education are discussed.
