Abstract

With social networking technologies are getting very popular today, the widely used communication technologies have impacted and changed the teaching and learning in the traditional classroom setting. One of the prominent features of these social networking tools is the asynchronous online discussion capability for encouraging students’ interaction, communication, collaboration, and productivity in learning activities. Along with the rise of social networking technologies, another skill has surfaced as an essential part of learning for current students, social-emotional learning (SEL). Effective SEL can foster academic engagement, enhance social and emotional competencies, reduce risk behaviors, and facilitate supportive relationships within high school communities. The purpose of this paper is to study how to effectively utilize a new social networking platform, Google Jamboard, collaboratively to enhance student’s SEL with a ultimate goal to enhance student’s academic performance. To effectively apply the social media tool, a review of literature including theoretical framework will be provided first. Benefits and issues of utilizing the collaborative tool to enhance students’ learning will be examined. The importance for students to study SEL will also be addressed.
