Abstract

Technology can be an integral tool for teachers and instructional use when used in developmentally appropriate ways. Technology has exponentially created rapid change in the way students and instructors engage in academics individually and collaboratively. There are drastic differences in the way instruction was delivered in the past compared to how technology is currently integrated into almost every aspect of education today. The National Education Technology Plan (2017) suggests that social media should play a central role in the preparation of and professional development for teachers. This article addresses how social media applications can aid in engagement and collaboration through the use of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. The problem instructors face is selecting the appropriate applications. With more than 500,000 apps and 80,000 qualifying as educational applications on the market, choosing the appropriate platforms to engage students effectively can be somewhat overwhelming (Hirsh-Pasek et al., 2015). To assist other instructors in narrowing the search, two instructors of pre-service and in-service teacher candidates collaborate to offer insight on two social media applications as a medium for engagement and collaboration.
