Data Insight: Helping Districts Use the Right Data for Improving Student Outcomes

School districts often struggle with integrating, analyzing, and interpreting the massive amount of data that they have, to be able to make decisions about teaching and learning. In this presentation, we discuss recent advances in identifying, collecting, integrating, and visualizing data that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is using to help district leaders and educators find new insights and meaning within their data. The focus is on helping districts improve student achievement and student outcomes through the effective use and analysis of data. The project and program at HMH, called Data Insight-as-a-Service (DIaaS) is a combination of people, processes, and technology implemented for a district. HMH brings together the right resources, to lead districts through a five-phase implementation approach moving from discovery/needs assessment to action planning.
The key to data insight is effectively bringing disparate data together, integrating it, and then viewing the data from multiple lenses and perspectives. We can triangulate the data by overlaying multiple data sets onto one visualization to give decision-makers a clear picture of their students. We then work together, shoulder to shoulder with school leadership to help prioritize needs, develop an action plan, and determine how to measure the efforts. We will discuss the approach and methodology as well as the technology stack we are using to deliver this exciting new product from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
