Abstract

In France, the arrival and the computer development of the new technologies and more particularly the intervention of a new tool as Internet, modified the practices of the genealogists amateurs. The purpose of the study was to determinate the change of practices of the French amateur genealogists with the arrival of Internet. What were the consequences on the genealogical community ? The methodology which we adopted is an inquiry by questionnaire which was differently distributed according to the type of genealogists amateurs which we wanted to get in touch. On 274 obtained answers, three categories were so defined 1) Genealogists who practised the genealogy before the arrival of Internet, and use henceforth this new media 2) Genealogists who did not change their genealogical practices and 3) genealogists who began while Internet was already in place and used it exclusively for their own researches. This paper describes the results of this inquiry .
