Using Social Media in Online Education Courses

As social media continues to expand in its use in online education in higher education institutions, there is a growing need to train distance instructors on how to select and effectively use a variety of these tools to enhance student learning. This paper identified the most frequently used social media in online education classes based on an exploratory survey given to online students and instructors. The top social media tools used in distance classes were forums within online courses, videos and video sharing websites, Skype, texting, Google docs, and online presentations using multimedia such as WebEx or PowerPoint with audio. In addition, the numerous advantages and disadvantages of using social media were presented by the respondents to assist online instructors in planning the use of social media in classes.
