Abstract

In 2013, 1:1 technology initiative was implemented at a Midwestern rural high school. It included funding that was projected to sustain all necessary technology for 12 years. In total, there are around 700 MacBook Air laptops with 1 laptop being issued to every student from grades 9-12. This study examined the impact of the overall implementation and the important role that the principal of the school played in the initiative. The study adopted a holistic perspective in examining the success, challenges, and obstacles of this implementation by using activity theory as a conceptual framework. Therefore, not only the individual stakeholders were examined but more importantly, the interrelationships that shaped the implementation were studied to elucidate a clearer picture of the process.
