Abstract
In our schools and classrooms today, students waiting (and expecting) to learn - as they have for hundreds of years. But, can you describe the typical classroom? If you hesitate, or feel perplexed by the question, there is good reason: the typical classroom does not exist. Who is the average student? What is “normal”? Can you picture what a “regular” classroom looks like? The reality is that diversity IS the norm in our schools, and all teachers (and those who prepare teachers) must prepare to address learner variation in their methods, materials, strategies, and assessments, both f2f and online. In this paper, the basics of learner variation and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are shared, including core principles, guidelines, strategies, and tools for UDL implementation in k-12, higher education and adult education. Ways to connect UDL to one’s own practice are explored.
