Abstract

We conducted one of the largest ever studies —of which phase 3 is ongoing— to gather students’ and teachers’ perceptions of the main uses, benefits, and challenges of daily use of the iPad in class. In all, 9,855 students aged 10 to 17 years and 657 teachers responded to the research questionnaire. In addition, we held 44 group interviews with students and 16 group interviews with teachers. To these we added 18 filmed lesson observations. This large-scale research approach enabled us to gain a more nuanced understanding of the uses, benefits, and challenges of using the iPad for teaching and learning. In fact, the results of the study revealed a large number of benefits of using the iPad for education. We should point out that because this was the first time that each of the schools had experimented with using iPads in class, the study results, including the questionnaire responses and the group interviews, also revealed a number of challenges for both teachers and students.
