Abstract

Residents in rural communities have been found to decrease access to postsecondary educational opportunities, and this has resulted in persistent economic and social challenges for these places and their residents. The authors assert that online distance education represents an interesting and promising opportunity for bringing educational options to populations that typically have few or none available. This paper provides a brief background on distance education, as well as important context regarding broadband availability and postsecondary access for rural populations. Two particular programs that have incorporated online elements are highlighted–one in teacher preparation and the other in vocational education. The piece concludes with a discussion of recommendations for administrators, instructors, and policymakers interested in better serving rural communities and students through online distance education.
