Abstract

Having to teach a graduate content area course on a five-day plan raised the issue of how and when students could get to know each other and establish a community of learners -- a context in which trust and respect would be established. The chosen method used the month prior to class meetings for online discussions not only as a matter of a prelude to the class but more importantly as a matter of creating a trusting learning community through the topics they discussed. By encouraging students to tell their own stories, trust was built, the context was set and the class was not only successfully in the students' minds, but also in the minds of the university administrators because deep learning was achieved for fewer dollars.
