Supporting Instructors in the Use of Technology in the Distance Education Classroom

Abstract: Instructors utilizing technology in their Distance Education classrooms possess certain needs, including a range of administrative and technological support functions. The provision of effective support structures for instructors during the course creation process, as well as continued throughout the course presentation and beyond, may increase the quality of the education experience. Studies examining the use of individual and team instructor support structures in Distance Education, including a range of theoretical and/or quantitative information, were reviewed. Topics considered essential for support of the distance education instructor include: ongoing technology training and trouble-shooting; instructional design; student training/assistance from technical personnel; administrative support; and mentoring. Practical suggestions for assisting instructors as well as corresponding administration and staff involved in Distance Education in their individualized institutional review of support structure are offered.
