Instructional Design in Distance Education (IDDE): Understanding the Strategies, Applications, and Implications

Many studies on distance education have focused on the role of distance learners. There has been comparatively little focus on instructional design strategies and activities, learner interaction types, and learning pedagogies by distance program instructors. Instructors in distance education have different sets of instructional strategies, activities, delivery methods, and so on. The purpose of this study is to examine faculty selection of instructional strategies and activities as they relate to interaction types (i.e., learner-content, learner-instructor, and learner-learner) in distance education. The study is restricted to institutions and/or programs in Iowa State University that offer distance education courses. This study also investigates the relationship among instructional activities, strategies and design selections by the faculty in distance education.
