Abstract

Did you know YouTube is a great tool to teach and improve writing tied to many standards including Common Core? Whether one has an ESL or traditional English classroom, the ability for students to comprehend information visually, summarize, and respond to it, helps to encourage critical thinking. This YouTube lesson allows students to examine a controversial issue of their choice via the largest social networking platform, summarize the controversy in narrative form including links to video clips that best defend their claim. Students will embark on a YouTube scavenger hunt to find a controversial issue they are passionate about. They will post a summary of the issue via their own YouTube channel as well as a narrative video response and defend a claim or supposition by linking to other YouTube videos. Students will then collaborate within the various student videos to access the quality of summaries, the quality of the video response and defense of the response.
