Abstract
This paper is a report on the text analysis of Japanese students’ answers to questions in Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters (AIE). AIE was developed by the Council of Europe as a self-reflective learning tool for raising awareness of intercultural understanding. All the students’ responses were first quantitatively analyzed by using KH Coder to find collocation networks, and then each student’s answers were examined to verify changes as they proceeded. The results show most of the students, in the course of answering 60 questions, learned the importance of intercultural understanding including studying foreign languages. This fact indicates the use of AIE as a supplementary material can be an effective way not only to raise students’ awareness of their own identities and attitudes toward different cultures, but to boost their motivation for learning foreign languages.
