Abstract

In the fall of 2011, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northern Arizona University began the process of redesigning the delivery of three freshman-level mathematics courses from a traditional model to one that would be web-based in nature. These redesigned courses would then be offered in an emporium-style setting beginning in the fall of 2012. This paper will detail the work involved in the redesign and first-year results of one of the three courses, MAT 108:Algebra for Precalculus. The structure of the course and changes made to that structure based on first semester results will be disseminated. Also discussed will be the policies of the newly created Lumberjack Mathematics Center, where the emporium courses were held, and other pertinent factors. Statistical data will be presented concerning student performance for the fall semester of 2012 and spring semester of 2013.
