Abstract
This brief paper will present the history, pedagogy and design of an innovative online course, Qualitative Research in Education, that is currently being offered through the International Education Department and the Distance Learning Project at Teachers College, Columbia University. The focus of the course is evaluation of education projects using qualitative research methods. The course is constructivist in nature. The students evaluate a real education project in collaboration with a participating national or international non-governmental organization (NGO). International learning communities comprised of students and professionals, virtual work and study teams, and the focus on an authentic education project form the basis for the design of this course. Online learning is the mechanism that makes this type of education possible.
