Abstract
We have created six variations of an e-course in order to assess the efficacy of interactivity when training volunteers how to tutor at-risk beginning readers. The e-course, called Training the Trainers (available at www.NeuronFarm.com), targets novice tutors and volunteers, but it would also be appropriate for parapros and beginning language arts teachers. The module includes research-based learning theory and the latest in automatic essay scoring. Using a between-subjects factorial design, users were randomly assigned to one of six conditions with varying levels of on-line interactivity and dynamic assessment. Users either constructed short essays or manipulated objects on-screen to build nonsense words. Learning was assessed with pre- and posttests.
