Abstract
The study investigated teacher readiness to engage in a 1:1 technology initiative in a large urban school district in the Central Valley of California. The district consisted of 24 schools and approximately 17,000 students. A descriptive mixed methods design was used to gather and analyze data addressing the target questions. Participants included 354 teachers, 15 support staff, and 28 administrators from 24 K-8 school sites. Findings showed the majority of participants strongly believed students will benefit from 1:1 electronic learning devices, but nearly half of those surveyed do not feel prepared to teach students the skills they need to use these 1:1 devices. Additionally, data indicates effective pedagogy and professional development are paramount to classroom effectiveness regardless of the initiative.
