Abstract
Recognizing the power that good case studies in the hands of good faculty, can have, Western Governors University (WGU), a distance-learning, competency-based institution, has integrated case studies into most areas of the Science Education, Nursing, and Educational Leadership degree programs in order to engage adult learners in construction of knowledge through authentic experiences that are within their frame of reference. Therefore, cases become real problems that students must unravel, construct background information about, and develop realistic solutions. In the midst of this endeavor, they begin to see the relevance of scientific concepts and models, and apply principles to new situations. This roundtable discussion will enable participants to examine the case study approaches to online competency-based adult education employed at WGU; further, the discussion will enable participants to discuss how these approaches can be employed in their own instructional settings, whether face-to-face to online.
