Abstract
This research proposes a zooming and scrolling interface for computer-based reading tests, which handles vertical Japanese sentences. Although CBT (Computer-Based Testing) has been used in several areas, there are still some concern about the readability and browsability of the texts displayed on computer screens. To solve this problem, this research proposes an interface that adopts "markup language" text processing for personally customizable display layout. This interface allows examinee to adjust the font size by zooming in and out with mouse operation. As its text wraps at the edge of the screen, examinee can read the whole text only by scrolling horizontally. Results from a pilot test have shown that performance of text skimming has increased compared to the traditional CBT interface.
