Abstract
Developing generic skills for students in higher education institutions has become a priority issue. Higher education institutions are experiencing continual pressure from government, industry, funding bodies and students, to place greater emphasis on developing generic skills that are currently delivered through the "hidden curriculum". This paper explores ways of developing students' generic skills in higher education through on-line delivery. By investigating the nature of generic skills and contemporary methods of teaching and learning, it proposes a framework for learning designs within higher education contexts to prepare students for the workplace by helping them develop generic skills as well as subject-specific knowledge.
