Motivations for Using the Web in Teaching

With the growth of the web in education, the author examines motivations for implementing web technologies in teaching. Six main motivations are identified: educator enthusiasm, to supplement face to face teaching, because the medium suits the topic, to encourage collaborative learning, for institutional benefit and as a delivery mechanism for Computer Assisted Learning (CAL). Issues relating to each of these motivations are examined. The author suggests that use of the web in education involves all educators in addressing distance education issues, and that by uncovering the motivations for using web technologies at the outset of the implementation process, such issues can be made explicit.
