Creating High-Quality Web Documents More Efficiently with the NetAuthor Environment

Today many commercial web authoring systems are available that focus on intuitive "What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get" (WYSIWYG) HTML code production. Some of these editors include some site management components that enable the author to manage large sites with hundreds of webpages. All these systems were designed to assist a general author of any kind of webpages. But the authoring process of web-based teaching documents differs in some important points from the authoring of for example, a company website.

In this article we show that plain HTML is insufficient for the creation of efficient hypertextual teaching documents. We name methods and tools that handle the web authoring problems. We also present the "NetAuthor" environment which provides a common user interface for the different methods and tools. NetAuthor combines the advantages of existing authoring systems and adds the functionality authors of web-based teaching documents need for their work. The main focus in the development was put on automatic document generation and document structuring-topics that were missing in other systems. Furthermore, database connectivity and visual navigation (Kreutz, Euler, & Spitzer, 1999a) are supported by the system. NetAuthor does not produce proprietary hypertext code but standard HTML which is enriched with multiple Java applets that were developed at the Institut für Medizinische Informatik (MI). Therefore hypertext documents produced with NetAuthor can be displayed with a normal web browser. In contrast to systems like HyperWave (Maurer, 1996) that use a central database installed on the webserver, NetAuthor produces HTML code directly that can either be used online or offline.
