Abstract

This poster session provides a public demonstration of the HTML-based CD-ROM "Visual Design for Instructional Multimedia." The work takes the position that creating instructional materials in multimedia requires different strategies and tactics in many cases than does creating informational, recreational or even "edutainment" multimedia products. It draws on the literatures describing research and practice of both education and commercial multimedia production, and synthesizes them to articulate best practice for instructional applications. Comprising several thousand files, the CD-ROM is a highly visualized treatment of visual design principles, as befits the topic. The structure is designed to permit an approach based on either the linearity of a traditional textbook and/or hypertext, with "jump-outs" to examples, elaborations of the topic, and references/citations. This design ameliorates the common problem of novices getting lost in hyperspace, while providing a much richer learning environment than is possible with a conventional textbook.
