Enhanced ICT Practicum Partnership: Improving pre-service teachers’ ICT toolkit

Abstract: Pre-service teacher education programs have a responsibility to prepare graduates to use ICT in their practice, yet here in Australia as in the United States they are often accused of failing to do so (Doering, Hughes, and Huffman 2003, Kay and Knaack (2005). Responding to this criticism, this paper offers a rationale for an alternative approach to the teaching practicum in Victoria, Australia. It provides a work-in-progress report on a pilot study based on forming partnerships with leading ICT schools. A rationale for the pilot will be discussed, the research design outlined, and an overview of participants (pre-service teachers, teacher mentors and school principals) provided. Discussion will also focus on the 4 primary and secondary schools who will act as hosts for the test group of 35 pre-service teachers, as well as the control group of pre-service teachers who will complete the existing practicum program which has a less structured approach to ICT.
