Abstract
University students are early adopters of information and communication technologies (ICT) for academic and personal uses. This study examines and compared university students’ use of computers and mobile phones in Japan and the United States. 138 Japanese and 171 American college students completed questionnaires about their PC and mobile phone use. Results show that American students communicate using PCs and social media more frequently than Japanese students, while mobile phone texting and call rates are similar. While Japanese use more mobile phone functions, American use was greater than predicted. Future studies will attempt to collect authentic communications from participants in different countries so it is important to know which technologies they customarily use and how.
