Abstract

Over the years we have seen a shift from the computer used as a tool for drill and practice activities and productivity to one that supports communication, collaboration, and knowledge building. These uses are most often occur, however, outside of the classroom or training room. Can flexible, user-controlled technology, in the hands of learners who use it regularly, impact didactic learning and make it more learner-centered? This paper aims to identify the areas where computer technology best supports learning and encourages self-regulation in both formal and informal settings. It strives to suggest ways that learning software can help prepare learners to be players in today’s knowledge economy and offers an initial framework for development of such a tool.
