Over the past ten years, we have seen the shift in the applications used by teachers and teacher educators from computer-based standalone software, to Web-based applications, and now to Cloud-based services. Each stage has brought with it associated affordances and limitations that change the ways that teachers use technology and the strategies that enable effective learning for student teachers at the university and K-12 schools in which they will work. As institutions adopt cloud tools like Google Apps for Education, fewer local resources may be required for basic technical support and increased focus may be placed on learning. However, issues related to device choice, information security, and accessibility must be reexamined. This panel brings together instructional technology leaders from higher education and a K-12 school district to facilitate a discussion among participants about how Google Apps and other cloud services are changing the educational landscape in both realms.
