Abstract
The rise in the use of podcasts over the past few years has been phenomenal. Whilst podcasts were initially popular for entertainment purposes, podcasts has now gained interest in the education sector. In the university sector, the adoption of podcasts has become significant. The purpose of this study is to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of podcasts as a learning tool. The study used the quantitative approach; a questionnaire was designed and administered amongst the UKZN first year Economics students. The responses obtained were analysed using the SPSS statistical package. The results indicated that students were most likely to use podcasts as a learning tool. The study found that students were excited about the podcasts as it allowed them to study at their own pace and time and be able to time-shift the delivery. Overall, students indicated positive perceptions and they have used the tool as anticipated by the producer (lecturer).
