This paper is to report on the successful integration of a classroom blog in grades 1 and 3 in an elementary school setting. Reaching students that are in the preliminary learning stages for writing and offering them a rich and varied opportunity to share their skills with others increases motivation, expands knowledge, broadens an audience and creates a very dynamic learning environment in multiple curricular areas. Creating a properly supervised blog affords students the opportunity to seamlessly acquire critical thinking skills in a 21st century learning environment. Students’ participation is highly motivated and self-directed with teacher guidance. A positive community spirit between home and school is created as young children inspire others to participate on a local and a global scale as they learn about other cultures and participate in humanitarian outreach efforts. Foundational skills of reading, writing and math are explored in a dynamic and highly relevant context.
