Barriers and Motivations to Student Adoption of OpenOffice.org PROCEEDINGS

The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Education (COE) has expanded its file format standardization to include Open Document Formats. Students entering online teacher preparation programs learn about the file formats through a technology orientation weekend in which they install OpenOffice.org software and are taught how to use it. The purpose of this study was to evaluate 167 student opinions toward OpenOffice.org after participating in the orientation weekend and their subsequent distance program. Results indicated that students were positive about the OpenOffice.org software but encountered barriers because of incompatibility when working with colleagues and COE faculty. Steps being taken by the College to address adoption barriers are discussed.
