Abstract

Two long-term activities were undertaken at a special needs school for students with intellectual and expressive language disabilities. Very simple software and hardware were used, where voices and sounds were imported into a computer through a microphone or voice recorder, then transformed into two-dimensional dot-codes, edited to include texts and pictures, and finally output with an ordinary color printer. Then the dot-codes on the printed sheet could be traced with a handy tool, Sound Reader, which decoded them into the original voices and sounds. The present system has excellent characteristics such that original voices of students and teachers, and sounds of nature can be processed as teaching materials for various activities in class. New communication aids recently developed by several developers, which reproduce voices and sounds by just touching the printed dot-codes, are also discussed.
