Abstract

Roundhouse is based on cognitive principles that improve retention in grades K-16. Roundhouse is actually a story map constructed by the learner and from the learners’ perspective. It is sequentially designed connecting pictures to concepts that relate within a schema based on the content being addressed. Therefore information is internalized and not memorized. Teachers are easily able to detect misconceptions due to the fact that the diagram is totally visual. Roundhouse has mainly been used with science content due to its abstract nature. Students must plan, diagram and reflect in order to complete the process. Exit surveys, products and interviews have established that during assessment the main ideas are easily recalled. Creativity, self-efficacy, and motivation have been demonstrated in all Roundhouse products. Teachers have indicated that Roundhouse is a fun and innovative instructional tool.
